Somebody Threw A Shoe At Danica Patrick's Car And Knocked Her Out Of A Race She Was Leading [Video]

Aug 18, 2012 5:06 PM

Somebody Threw A Shoe At Danica Patrick's Car And Knocked Her Out Of A Race She Was Leading "Something's fucked up" is all Danica Patrick could muster after leading much of today's NASCAR Nationwide tour race at Montreal then being knocked out by a mechanical issue after running over a shoe thrown onto the track by a spectator.

Patrick set a personal record for laps in the lead position in what was her first race since Daytona even reaching the front of the line. Radio communication between Patrick & her pit suggested a part of her car was torn off by the shoe when her car ran over it. [ESPN]

Dead Letters: "Congrats You Unimaginative Retard"Welcome back to Dead Letters, the feature in which we reprint our favorite fan mail from throughout the week. Now for your letters.

Subject: Too Funny

From: Billy Tanner
To: Drew Magary

Dude, you are fucking hilarious. Do you really think anyone in New Orleans is offended by anything you say? We have been at the bottom of the football barrel for so long that there isn't a fucking thing you can possibly say that would make us do anything but laugh. Your opinion is just that. Yours. And it's great. We relish the fact that we hurt people. It's football you faggot. We love the fact that nothing you can say takes away the glory of a Superbowl win. We have the best QB in football over the last 6 years. Can't change that. You know bounties have been placed on players as long as the game has been around. We are a fucking good football team and you can't change that either.

As far as your characterization of the city, that's about as juvenile as it gets. Gumbo, Gumbo, Crawdad Gumbo. What the fuck is that all about? Did you let a 4-year old write that? And you are in New York. That's a fucking joke. Only New Yorkers think their city is so fucking great that if you live anywhere else you are a toothless retarded moron. By the way, I don't recall any of the NY football teams defeating us since Drew Brees got here.

And if your lily white ass is brave enough to show your face here I am sure a couple of NOLA brothers can help you out by assisting you in getting your jaw wired shut.

You are awesome, keep up the hate.
Fuck New York

Subject: Why your the worst writer on the internet possibly ever

From: Justin...Xbox 360 [ed.: Yeah, we don't know either.]
To: Drew Magary

Mostly because your articles suck, you do nothing but bash on everybody and everything, so lets look at the five reasons Drew "big daddy" Magary sucks.
1. Reason number one because you look like fucking AJ Pierzynski and we can all agree that he is a total douche
2. Your articles (more like blogs) are backed by no research and are nothing but your retarded opinions that nobody cares about
3. You have a book on Amazon that ranks 787,016 in best sellers, I mean seriously what does that mean maybe 3 people bought the book all immediate family members.
4. Your not even on Wikipedia if that's not insulting to someone with your kind of ego then I don't know what it
5. Lastly your football knowledge is a bigger joke than your tumblr website and I actually hate myself for doing research to write this email I have much more important things to do with my life.

Now eat that bowl of GUMBOLAYA you fat ass

From: Ray Gruezke
To: Drew Magary

You are one ignorant piece of shit. You know nothing about this city or our team. You are basing argument on unsupported claims by the league and its commissioner. I am sure you believe in the wire taping allegations that came out too because you saw them on ESPN. But go ahead and base your opinion off of Cajun pawn stars, Swamp Loggers, and any other stupid fucking Hollywood show about Louisiana. Bashing the tam is one thing, but the retarded quotes and gumbo crap makes you look like a piece of shit that has nothing better to say than make fun of asinine stereotypes that are not true. You are too far up your own ass to come up with a decent argument that you resort to the every day stupid insults that every movie writer has put on this state. Congrats you unimaginative retard.

This guy is a joke. I can't believe he would ever get paid to write an article. If you are going to call an entire city dumb you should proabably correct all of your grammatical errors in your column first. "Most of them are all virulently racist"? HA! Clearly he doesn't truly know anything about the city or much else for that matter.

Drew...I just read your article about how much the saints suck.....First off, you're wrong...our team is good..theres no way to argue logically against that....Second, where's all this hate coming from??....Third, and most important...I dare you to go and speak the words that you're writing out loud in New Orleans...I don't think it would go so well for you..I hope you figure out a cooler way to deal with your insecurities...

Drew, I appreciate ur brutal honesty and its what alot of people need to hear here in Cincinnati but while most is true in ur article I'm offended being a bengals fan. Show a little class when talking about the dead like Chris Henry for fucks sake, he was a talented wr. Maybe u could come coach for a year and show us how its done since u are a perfect human. Players on all teams make mistakes and have character flaws as do me and you and I personally find inspiration from NFL players that turn or try to turn their life around as I did, and do. Really as I write this I realized I'm just wasting my time and people that make $ in the media, or in general by tearing others down for the most part that I've met r sad cases of lames that usually nobody likes that have trouble getting laid. U give me gratitude that I don't make a living like u, id rather have a backbone and do real work and stand by what I love than but be a journalist who makes a living pointing out flaws of NFL players who make way more $ than u.

Good Afternoon Drew,

As a born and raised Cincinnatian now living in Chicago, I felt I needed to email you in response to the above article. I must admit, I laughed my ass off on numerous occasions, even getting a few stares from co-workers wondering what kind of drug I was on today. However, one part pissed me the fuck off.

And you Cincy folk deserve him. I went to camp with kids from Cincinnati and they were racist as shit. When it comes to Cleveland versus Cincinnati, America sides with poor Cleveland every time.

Really Drew, really? Because you went to some shitty camp with a few assholes from Cincinnati, our city "deserves" the piece of shit that is Mike Brown? I'll admit, the city has its share of racists cum-stains, but give me a break. Most of the city's inhabitants are good people who "deserve" a owner that is actually looking out for the city and its citizens.

Let it be clear, no one deserves Mike Brown. Not Cincinnati, not Mobile, Alabama, and not New York City. As you said, the man not only drops deuces on the grass of PBR every Sunday, he sucks the county dry of funds that could be used to actually improve the region. The amount of shit Cincinnatians put up with on a yearly basis and to have you justify it because were all "racist as shit" is a god damn atrocity.

Regards,
Alex Thinnes

This Is The Giant Tree Limb That Hospitalized A Woman In Oregon By Suddenly Falling On Her [Injuries]

Aug 17, 2012 7:00 PM

This Is The Giant Tree Limb That Hospitalized A Woman In Oregon By Suddenly Falling On HerPoor Melany Crocker. According to The Oregonian, the 21-year-old rising senior at Linfield (Ore.) College was running at a local park Wednesday evening when the Sweetgum tree branch you see above came crashing down on her. Crocker is a sprinter on the Linfield track team. She was pinned to the ground and taken to a local hospital, where she had surgery on Thursday. KPTV reported that Crocker broke her pelvis in two places and broke her forearm. She was later listed in good condition.

Park officials initially didn't know what happened, according to The Oregonian:

Joan Hallquist, spokeswoman for Portland Parks & Rec, said the limb just cracked. It's not clear why. She said it could have been weakened by insects or was injured in some other way.

Hallquist later told KPTV that the heat caused the limb to break. Stupid trees. Just another reminder that jogging is the worst.

Your Expendables 2 Power Rankings [Grierson & Leitch]

Aug 17, 2012 5:35 PM

Your Expendables 2 Power RankingsThe Expendables 2 has 11 names on its poster only because there is not room, either in poster space or running time, for 47. It is New Years Eve with testicles. It is the turducken of action movies. Rather than review the film, I thought I'd just rank those 11 names, in ascending order of Expendables 2 badassery. Let's go to it.

11. Jet Li. The martial arts star was mostly used for comedic effect in the first film—he's smaller than everyone else, you see, and also Asian—and, considering he retired from action films a few years ago, he sorta just hangs around these movies to helpfully boost up the overseas market. He has one fight scene and then disappears from the movie by jumping out of a plane. I had forgotten he was in it until I looked at the poster to write this piece.

10. Randy Couture. The former UFC champion has the least charisma of anyone in The Expendables 2, and boy, that's saying something. He's the most inexperienced actor in the cast and shows it, and his only real character trait is "has mangled ear." The other actors in the movie all make fun of him for this affliction, which totally makes sense. After all, they don't have cauliflower ears, considering they've spent their lives loafing around movie sets pretending to get punched, while mocking guys who actually have been.

9. Terry Crews. The bodybuilder/Tim & Eric co-collaborator is young enough to have a believably ripped body, unlike most everyone else hanging around, and clearly he's the cutup most days at the gym, which makes him "funny Expendable" in these parts. Does win extra credit points for being the only black guy in the cast but not having to endure "Hey, you're a black guy!" references every time on screen. That's no small feat for an action movie.

8. Bruce Willis. Without question the most talented actor in this cast—he's always seemed miscategorized as a Tough Guy Action Star; sure, he can do it, but he can do lots else too—he doesn't quite fit in. He's always glowering and pretending this is all real, for some reason, and, sorry, he'll never handle a machine gun as well as Sly or Arnold and definitely shouldn't do it next to them.

7. Liam Hemsworth. The token "person whose balls are neither terrifyingly small thanks to years of repeated steroid injections nor scraping against his inner knee," Hemsworth is here under the amusing illusion that teenage girls will see the guy from The Hunger Games and decide they'd like to stare at Sylvester Stallone's veins for two hours. Not to spoil anything here, but the first time you see Hemsworth's character, "Billy," he's putting a note for his girlfriend in his pocket and talking about how he can't wait to get out of this business so they can go get married in Paris and live a fruitful, happy, longer-than-this-movie's-running-time life together. Good luck with that, kid.

6. Dolph Lundgren. The best way I can describe The Expendables 2 is that the movie's comedic relief character is Dolph Lundgren. He does win points for his character being a secret mathematical genius and Fulbright scholar, considering the actor himself happens to be the exact same thing.

5. Chuck Norris. My favorite thing about Chuck Norris is that he tries so, so hard to be in on the Chuck Norris Facts joke ... but somehow still isn't. He plays a lone-wolf character who shows up every 20 minutes and blows everything away from offscreen, likely because at this point in his life, Chuck Norris is incapable of picking up an assault rifle unless he plans on writing a column about it. Here's a fun thought experiment: Imagine what Chuck Norris would look like if he shaved his beard.

4. Arnold Schwarzenegger. The years of running the government of California seem to have both honed Arnold's comic timing and transformed his forehead into Clint Eastwood's. (Seriously, right?) Arnold's barely in the film, but he's in it more than he was in the first one, and he even gets to fire off a few machine-gun rounds. He's also responsible for the film's funniest moment, when he escapes a gunfight in a Mini Cooper. Though his line, "My shoe is bigger than this car" would have been a lot funnier if it had been "I've taken shits bigger than this car." I bet it would have been true too.

3. Jason Statham. The only cast member who is still in his action-star prime, Statham is generally underrated as both an actor and a screen presence. He's his usual Statham self in The Expendables 2, kicking people and stabbing people and kick-stabbing people like it's the most natural thing in the world. He also pretty much won my heart forever by introducing a terrific catchphrase to the action-hero lexicon: "I now pronounce you man and knife!" I'm gonna be saying that at every wedding I go to for the rest of my life.

2. Jean-Claude Van Damme. If you haven't seen the hilarious, sad, absolutely gripping French art film JCVD, which came out in 2008 and features an aging, decrepit, pathetic Van Damme, playing himself, stumbling across a bank heist and ... you know, you sorta just have to see it. After that movie, honestly, I was just so happy to see Van Damme so taut and menacing and doing well for himself again that I found myself cheering every time he was on screen. Seriously, see JCVD. You'll never think of Street Fighter the same way again.

1. Sylvester Stallone. Oh, Sly. Bless his heart. Stallone's desperate insistence that he can make it 1988 again by science or magic would be sad if it weren't, deep down, so charming. The guy keeps himself in terrific shape at 66—thanks to loads and loads and loads of HGH, of course—and seems to truly believe in his ridiculous character, who leads these team of men who have nothing in common other than a truly impressive ability to avoid massive numbers of bullets. Even when he was in straight-to-video mode, you could tell that Stallone considered himself the biggest movie star in the world, so now that he's "back," it's like nothing ever changed. This movie doesn't have the surrealist madness of the last Rambo sequel—which was so cartoonishly violent that I thought at the time it might be an art project—but it has Stallone in his element, in charge, believing that all is right in the world, that he can just keep on blowing shit away and snarling and shooting off one-liners and we will never age and we will all live forever. He's a lunatic, but I love him for it. How could you not?

A Fan Suffered An Apparent Heart Attack During Tonight's Blue Jays Game (UPDATE) UPDATE 11:15 PM: Toronto police have now confirmed to CityNews Toronto and the Globe and Mail that the man who was taken to the hospital has now died. MLB.com also has a roundup of player reaction to what happened. If you care to watch the above video, it shows what preceded the stoppage in play. You cannot see the man being treated and it cuts away before he's moved to the cart, though it may nonetheless be disturbing to some viewers. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the man's family. The original post is below.

Details are still somewhat sketchy, but early reports are that a fan seated near the Rogers Centre front row suffered a heart attack during tonight's Blue Jays-White Sox game. It happened during the bottom of the seventh inning, and play was halted as a cart came into foul territory and wheeled the person away for further medical attention. CPR was being performed on the person as they were being wheeled away. We'll bring you more details as they become available.

Did Performance-Enhancing Drugs Actually Help Melky Cabrera? [Melky Cabrera]

Did Performance-Enhancing Drugs Actually Help Melky Cabrera?Since MLB announced Melky Cabrera's 50-game suspension for testosterone earlier this afternoon, a few folks have been crowing about what a fraud Cabrera is. Evidently Cabrera's sin is worse than the usual steroid stuff because he improved dramatically over the last two years and planned to parlay that improvement into a big new contract. Buster Olney likened him to a bank robber who forgot to gas up his getaway car, and CBS's Jon Heyman went further than that:

Maybe Melky's numbers are nothing but a mirage, anyway.

Maybe he really isn't a .346 hitter on a level playing field. Maybe he doesn't have 11 home runs playing home games in a big ballpark, or 60 RBI. Or even 13 stolen bases.

Maybe he doesn't have anywhere near those numbers without the extra help.
[...]
His career turnaround seemed too good to be true. And so it was.

Heyman couches everything in "maybes" here, but his point is essentially this: Without testosterone supplements, Melky Cabrera is a below-average player, the doughy fourth outfielder he was in New York. With them—and because of them—he's on the verge of winning a batting title.

But a closer examination of Cabrera's numbers suggests an alternate possibility: Performance-enhancing drugs haven't done much at all for his offense.

Yes, Melky's hitting .346, a full 62 points better than his career average. But everything else he's doing is in line with his usual performance. He's walking in seven percent of his plate appearances and striking out in 12 percent of them, which are the same figures he's had all his career. He's hitting line drives on 21.8 percent of his batted balls, only a slight uptick from his usual 19.7 percent mark. The 10.7 percent of his fly balls he's hitting for homers is in line with the 10.3 percent of his fly balls he hit for homers on the 2009 Yankees, back when he was supposedly a loser.

The only big spike for Cabrera came with his BABIP (batting average on balls in play). His career BABIP is .309, but he hit .332 on balls in play last year and .379 on balls in play this year. Good luck explains some of this, and we can explain even more by looking at Cabrera's underlying numbers.

Players who hit more ground balls will have higher BABIPs than players who hit more fly balls. (Derek Jeter, our modern BABIP champion, hits a bonkers 58 percent of his batted balls on the ground.) Cabrera hit more ground balls this year than last year, so his BABIP ticked up. As for the pre-2011 spike, Cabrera got faster after losing 20 pounds during the offseason. In 2011, he set career highs in infield hits—with 26—and bunt hits—with 8. Those balls would have been outs in past years, but because of his new physique they were hits in 2011. His BABIP and batting average increased accordingly.

This year's version of Melky is more or less last year's version of Melky, only with a different approach at the plate: more ground balls. And last year's Melky was more or less the same old Melky he had always been, just a little lighter on his feet. That transformation isn't outlandish for a player entering his prime, and it sure as hell isn't indicative of a player receiving a significant chemical boost.

But MLB only needs dirty urine; it doesn't have to prove that the drugs worked. Easy enough. So the real challenge ahead awaits Cabrera's agent, Dominic Torres. Torres will have to prove to interested teams that the drugs didn't work. He should consider the numbers above a head start.

Specially Contoured Jeans Designed To Combat Scourge Of "Hockey Ass" [This Is So Stupid]

Aug 15, 2012 11:50 PM

Specially Contoured Jeans Designed To Combat Scourge Of "Hockey Ass"So, here's a real product you can buy that I never thought warranted existence. The hockey apparel-minded folks at Gongshow announced this one back in January, but it has just released its new Hustle & Flow jeans, an otherwise ordinary-looking pair of pants that serve a very specific purpose. We'll let Gongshow describe its most recent creation:

Introducing the first ever jeans in the world made to fit a hockey player. Hockey players have massive legs and usually what is known as a "Hockey Ass" – a bit bigger from hours of skating, squats, bedroom games and overall just dominating life.

Beauty Fit Jeans - Built for Hockey Players

Having never played hockey at any significant level of competition, I had no idea this was such an issue for so many players that it warranted a custom fit. They're available for $90 now through Gongshow's Canada site, but they will be in the US online store on Thursday.

Until then, keep dominating life, you guys.

After 75 Years And 25 Matches, The U.S. Men's Soccer Team Finally Wins In Mexico No one really expected much from the USMNT tonight in a friendly at Estadio Azteca against Olympic gold medal-winning Mexico (and its super-creepy mascot), but an 80th-minute goal from Michael Orozco Fiscal—and some incredible goaltending from Tim Howard—gave the US a historic 1-0 win against its biggest soccer rival. The win improves the USMNT's overall record on Mexican soil to 1-23-1. Afterward, Mexican fans were none too happy with the result, as ESPN's Ian Darke found out firsthand.

Mike Pereira, Who Hates The NFL's Replacement Refs, Used To Be A Backup Replacement Ref [Nfl]

Mike Pereira, Who Hates The NFL's Replacement Refs, Used To Be A Backup Replacement RefMike Pereira has been so outspoken in his role as the NFL's hall monitor for Fox Sports that even Bill Belichick is outsourcing his opinion of replacement officials to him. And if the early returns are any indication, the scabs are indeed going to be a disaster. But remember: Pereira used to work for the NFL as its vice president of officiating. And back in 2001, when the league last had labor issues with its officials, Pereira was more than eager to toe the company line.

CBS Sports's Mike Freeman dug up an old Dallas Morning News story in which Pereira offered praise for the work of some replacement refs. The article also referenced a memo Pereira had written to the replacements that included these words:

"We are using you because of your ability and instincts as an official. The game is the same no matter on what level it is played. You officiate the game and we will guide you through the differences in the rules."

To which Freeman added:

But wait, it gets more interesting. The article states this: "One of the alternate officials was Mike Pereira, whose day job is as the NFL's director of officiating."

So, if the article is accurate, Peirera was a backup replacement official.

Huh. It was only last month that Pereira said "the integrity of the game will be compromised" by the presence of the replacements. Either scabs aren't what they used to be, or Peirera isn't.

Stan Van Gundy On The Magic: "You Get What You Deserve" [Stan Van Gundy]

Stan Van Gundy On The Magic: "You Get What You Deserve"Every morning, the fine folks at Sports Radio Interviews sift through the a.m. drive-time chatter to bring you the best interviews with coaches, players, and personalities across the sports landscape. Today: Stan Van doesn't sound too sorry about the mess in Orlando.

Stan Van Gundy joined 790 The Ticket in Miami with Jonathan Zaslow and Hoch to discuss feeling badly for the Orlando Magic players who had to deal with the Dwight Howard trade rumors, the Magic locker room not being as bad as it was perceived to be by the media during the Dwight Howard trade saga, making sense of Dwight Howard's urge to stay and then leave the Orlando Magic, his next career move and not wanting to go into broadcasting with Mike Breen and Jeff Van Gundy.

How do you feel about the fallout from everything that has happened in Orlando? Are you frustrated? Relieved?
"Well I'd like to have a job. That'd be nice. That's not a great feeling. We just got caught up in a bad situation and our organization didn't handle it very well. Because of that I would say we probably deserve a lot of what happened as an organization and certainly not the other players. I thought those guys…I felt badly for them, a group that worked hard and was very professional all year long and didn't deserve everything that happened, but from our organization especially the people at the very top it just wasn't handled very well, so you get what you deserve."

Did you go home and say I can't believe how bizarre this is being played out with Dwight Howard?
"No. Not really. Look there's always something going on in the NBA. I think when you are in the season you are just sort of dealing with things day-to-day and the next practice and the next game and everything else, so no there is always issues. That was our issue this year and we dealt with it. Quite honestly we were dealing with it very well with everything that was going on until Dwight Howard went out and obviously we lost our best player. We were playing very well. We had the 3rd best record in the East and the 5th best record in the league and we're playing well. Then when he [Dwight Howard] went down quite honestly we struggled. He was sort of our guy and we didn't play as well after that, but I thought we were still pretty competitive in everything else. It wasn't as bad inside our team and inside the locker room as it was out in the media."

Can you give us any clarity on why Dwight Howard demanded to be traded and then said he would stay and then after the season concluded he wanted to be traded again?
"Well, I think it confuses everyone. It confuses all of us. I was a little bit surprised at the time. Look I think Dwight Howard is a guy, who likes his teammates, enjoys the camaraderie of the locker room and he's gotta realize you are in season making that decision and the guys you are with every single day are your teammates. It's also…the timing of it is we were also out on the road at that time and just played San Antonio, so it's not like he's going home after practice or something else. He is with his teammates all day and sort of got wrapped up in that and just decided hey I want to…I might as well just finish this season in Orlando and he opted in, but at the same time I don't think his desire to leave at some point ever left him, so it was more I think to finish the year in Orlando.

What's your next move? Are you going to get back into coaching?
"Well I don't know about that. I think there is consideration. I certainly have that itch. No question. But there's also considerations in this business if you are going to do that you are going to have to pick up your family and move them somewhere else in the country. Next year I'll have three in high school. It's a tough time to be moving everybody, so it may be awhile, but we will see."

You would be a tremendous edition to the broadcast booth with Mike Breen and Jeff Van Gundy:
"Yeah I don't think that is going to happen. I think those guys have got a pretty good chemistry there going on and I wouldn't want to mess with that, but we'll see what opportunities are out there and see if there's something that works and be fun and keep me a little bit busy, but I think those two guys are pretty settled in doing what they do and they do it very, very well."

Here's What The Scorecard From Felix Hernandez's Perfect Game Looks Like [Felix Hernandez]

Aug 15, 2012 9:50 PM

Here's What The Scorecard From Felix Hernandez's Perfect Game Looks LikeDave Sims, who called a fantastic game today for Root Sports, fully embracing the fact that Felix Hernandez was on his way to history and eschewing any ridiculous notions of superstition during the telecast, just posted a photo of his scorecard, and it's astonishing to see. The three boxes (and no more, ever) representing each Rays inning. Seeing all the green boxes, representing strikeouts, in the later innings. The crazy number of zeros lining the right and underside of the columns. There've only been 22 others like this scorecard in MLB history, so they really don't get much more interesting than this.

Mexico's Official Soccer Mascot Will Haunt Your Dreams [Nightmare Fuel]

Aug 15, 2012 8:20 PM

Mexico's Official Soccer Mascot Will Haunt Your DreamsThis is Kin, the official mascot of the Mexican national soccer team, which faces the USA tonight at Estadio Azteca. Mexico is 23-0-1 all-time against the USMNT on its home soil, though I'm thinking it's the hideous sight of this monstrosity and not the extreme altitude or exuberant fanbase that's to blame for that. (Click the photo to embiggen, if you dare.)

New Jersey Wants To Legalize Sports Betting. The NCAA, MLB, NFL, NBA And NHL Want To Stop Them. [Gambling]

New Jersey Wants To Legalize Sports Betting. The NCAA, MLB, NFL, NBA And NHL Want To Stop Them.New Jersey has announced plans to allow sports betting at Atlantic City casinos, and the major sports leagues are not pleased. The NCAA, MLB, NFL, NBA and NHL filed a lawsuit last week arguing that New Jersey's sports betting plan violates a 1992 federal law.

Saturday Down South has a good history of the leagues' opposition to gambling on sports. It all started in 1992 when the four major pro leagues, along with the NCAA, lobbied Congress to pass anti-sports betting legislation. This led to the adoption of the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA). The law banned "lottery, sweepstakes, or other betting, gambling, or wagering scheme" based on sports, except in the four states where sports betting was already legal (Delaware, Montana, Nevada and Oregon). New Jersey was given one year to legalize wagering on sports. They didn't, and they weren't grandfathered in with the other four states.

When the bill was presented to Congress, NBA commissioner David Stern, then-NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue, and then-MLB commisioner Fay Vincent testified to try to swing lawmakers. Tagliabue argued that betting on games would "inevitably foster a climate of suspicion about controversial plays and intensify cynicism with respect to player performances, coaching decisions, officiating calls and game results."

Stern took a bit of a different approach. His argument was essentially that everything having to do with the NBA is the property of the NBA. Stern said that the NBA "owns the rights to its games and the manner of their exploitation." The previous year, speaking in opposition to a proposed sports betting provision in Oregon, Stern suggested that if the government wanted to do away with the freedom of the press to better serve the NBA's interests, he'd be all for it. He said:

"We would actively support any legislation that would prohibit the media from carrying point spreads, if such legislation were permissible under the First Amendment."

But back to New Jersey. PAPSA is pretty clear: no betting on sports. New Jersey's plan is also clear: we want betting on sports. This obvious disconnect is the basis of the leagues' lawsuit. Of course, lawsuits, especially federal lawsuits, take forever to get sorted out, so don't expect to head down to AC and lose all your money betting on football any time soon.

Here Is A Video Of Roger Goodell Getting Picked Up By A Youth Football Coach [Video]

Aug 15, 2012 4:06 PM

Here Is A Video Of Roger Goodell Getting Picked Up By A Youth Football Coach Today NFL commissioner Roger Goodell hosted USA Football and a few player safety coaches for a conference on Heads Up Football, "a free program that teaches proper tackling technique, concussion awareness and offers coaching education to youth football leagues." Youth football player safety coach Michael Brandt took the opportunity to demonstrate the "proper tackling technique," on commissioner Goodell in front of the whole group and (fortunately for us) someone's iPhone. Takeaway message? The "proper tackling technique," according to this demo, appears to be as follows: hug your opponent (whose arms will be outstretched and waiting), pick them up, then put them down. Gently.

Throwing Up Dip And Learning About Blowjobs: Deadspin's Notes On Summer Camp [Deadspin XY]

Throwing Up Dip And Learning About Blowjobs: Deadspin's Notes On Summer CampI went to Camp Deerhorn in Rhinelander, Wis., every summer for the majority of my adolescence. It was an awesome camp. We got to fire guns. We got to shoot arrows. We got to go on horseback rides. (I've never shit my pants with more direct force than the first time I was on a horse and it went from trotting to cantering. Holy crap).

Summer camp is important to kids because that's the first time you really get to venture out into the world on your own. There's no mother around to prevent you from keeping a porn mag under your pillow. There's no father around to yell at you if you don't eat your dinner. It's your first chance to interact with the world on your own terms, even though you have no clue what those terms should be. As a result, you discover all kinds of shit that your family won't (and can't) tell you about, shit that stays with you for a long time. Shit like:

Once every three weeks at Camp Deerhorn, they would grease up a watermelon and we'd play football with it in the lake, which isn't latently homosexual at all. I even came THISCLOSE to hooking up with a girl from girls camp once. She was halfway to my cabin before changing her mind and deciding she didn't want some fat booger-eater pawing at her boob all afternoon. Can't blame her for that.

I got to smoke cigarettes for the first time. I dipped for the first time, threw up, and then was publicly mocked by one of the counselors at our Sunday night campfire for throwing up my dip. Someone showed me a vagina in a magazine for the first time at camp. It was way hairy. There was one female counselor at camp named Claire, and every single boy at the camp wanted to have sex with her. One time, during a meeting of campers, I screamed out, "Claire wants a blowjob!" One of the older campers turned to me and said, "You can't give a girl a blowjob, you idiot." He then explained to me what a blowjob was. I totally didn't know that!

We ate every meal in a big mess hall and had to say quick prayer before eating. I remember every word of that prayer. "For these and all his mercies, God's holy name we praise." For half the meals, I would skip eating the entree and just tear the crusts off a piece of white bread, scrunch the bread into a ball, and then eat it. After lunch every day, we got to choose between two candy bars to buy for dessert. There was a great deal of rumormongering in the mornings as to which candy bars would be offered. "I heard it's gonna be Skor or Charleston Chew." We used the candy bars as camp currency. I always tried to win an extra candy bar by beating my cousin at HORSE and I routinely failed.

The camp was divided into four separate teams for the entire summer: Apache (green), Chippewa (yellow), Navajo (dark blue), and Iroquois (red). Every team had a 17-year-old leading it and the four leaders were considered GODS. They got their own cabin (called a koogee) to hang out in. There was a big board in the main hall of the camp that detailed the history of the four teams year by year, dating all the way back to the '50s. Every leader was noted. On the opposite wall, there was an even bigger board that listed every camper from every team. Your goal was to get stars in every activity—red, then blue, then gold. Getting a gold star was a big fucking deal. We used to stare at the board, marveling at campers who managed to get gold stars in virtually every activity. Fucking overachievers. Every star counted as points. The team with the most points won the summer. And any camper that reached a set amount of points was given WARRIOR status and got his name written on the memorial wall on the other side. You could also be a SUPER WARRIOR, which again meant you were a fucking overachiever and I hated you. I made WARRIOR once. I hope my name is still on that wall. It fucking better be. I didn't do all that canoeing for nothing.

On Sundays, we got the day off from activities so that we could clean our koogees. We'd never clean them. We'd spend all morning listening to America's Top 40 and talking about tits or reading Truly Tasteless Jokes instead. I listened to my Walkman for hours at a time. When we weren't talking tits, we were trying to figure out ways to get back some remnant of civilization: candy, movies, etc. If you were old enough, you got thrown into Koogee 20, which was nestled way back in the woods, where the 15-year-olds smoked and listened to GNR all day long. When I was finally old enough to qualify for Koogee 20, I was far happier than I had any right to be. I smoked 50 Swisher Sweets that summer.

Once a session, they drove us to Eagle River to watch a movie and buy shitloads of rock candy. The movie was usually horrible (We got Harry and the Hendersons once, which sucked), but the candy ... oh man, the fucking candy. There was one kid named Matt who had rich parents and serious emotional problems and he used to buy Pixy Stix the size of a fucking flagpole. I think he was on Ritalin. Like, the first test patient for it. When we got the candy back to camp, every camper put his candy in his foot locker and locked that shit tight. Candy theft led to fucking wars.

The counselors used to go to a strip club named Weasels when we were asleep. They told us it was the worst strip club in America and I took their word for it. I still remember most of those counselors by name. When you're that young, counselors are like a higher species. I was awed by them. I felt like they were 20 times my size. Every Sunday night, one of them would take up a guitar and sing cover songs to the entire camp. On the last day, they always played "Country Road" by John Denver, only they changed it to "Deerhorn Road," and every goddamn bratty 12-year-old there would be a sobbing wreck by the end. To finish the campfire, we always sang this song:

In Deerhorn Hall
In Deerhorn Hall
Where every boy is king
In Deerhorn Hall
In Deerhorn Hall
We will laugh
We will play
We will sing
With the food piled on the table
We will eat while we are able
We will sing everyone
And we'll all have fun
In old Deerhorn Hall

Now that's corny as hell, and I'm a cynical sack of shit. But you sing that song to me today and I'll weep for 10 straight minutes.

It wasn't all roses at Camp Deerhorn, of course. Kids got in fights all the time. Athlete's foot was mandatory. Whenever I pleasured myself in my bottom bunk, I had to worry that my bunkmate could hear it from the top. Every koogee reeked of cum and farts. I got chewed out by a counselor for shooting an arrow directly into the air (fair enough). And I think I got a counselor fired because I stole his handgun and pointed it at a friend. Still ... CAMP!

As this summer winds down, we'd like your summer camp stories, too. Horror stories. Hookups. Ptomaine poisoning. IT JUST DOESN'T MATTER. Whatever's funny, throw them into the discussion below. No one comes back from camp without a good story to tell. Or a melted Snickers in the bottom of their laundry bag.

Melky Cabrera Tests Positive For Testosterone, Is Suspended 50 Games, Can Still Win The Batting Title [Melky Cabrera]

Aug 15, 2012 3:45 PM

Melky Cabrera Tests Positive For Testosterone, Is Suspended 50 Games, Can Still Win The Batting TitleThe Giants' Melky Cabrera wowed us this year. That doughy loser who couldn't cut it in New York or Atlanta managed to hit .346/.390/.516 in 113 games, and for good measure, he won the All-Star Game for the National League. But that will be all for him in 2012, because Cabrera, MLB says, was pumped full of foreign testosterone. And there's no Kenosha fridge ex machina coming to save him.

There are two silver linings for the Melkman, though. The first is that he will be available to play in the league championship series, should San Francisco make it that far. He has to miss only the team's first five playoff games. The second is that he can still win the batting title, should Pittsburgh's man Andrew McCutchen dip and no one else rise. There was some chatter on Twitter about Melky falling one plate-appearance short of the minimum required to qualify for the batting title. That's true, he did. But for the unqualified MLB just adds imaginary outs to get one to the minimum. So, for the chase's sake, Melky will wind up with a .34562 batting average instead of the .34641 figure he has now. His line remains in good shape. That big contract extension? Not so much.

Big East Conference Drops Last Pretense, Hires TV Executive As Commissioner [Death To The Ncaa]

Big East Conference Drops Last Pretense, Hires TV Executive As CommissionerThe Big East hired Mike Aresco to be its commissioner yesterday. Here are actual quotes from the presidents of two of the league's member schools, from the statement announcing the decision:

"His breadth of experience and depth of knowledge in intercollegiate athletics will continue to move the BIG EAST forward on a successful path.""His career has been filled with achievement and success in intercollegiate sports."

So what is it that constitutes Aresco's "experience," "depth of knowledge," "achievement," and "success" in "intercollegiate athletics"? He comes to the Big East from the institution of higher education known as CBS Sports, where he has worked since 1996 as a vice president of programming. Along the way, he picked up the words "senior" and "executive" in front of his title.

Here's more from that Big East statement:

He is responsible for managing the division's college sports properties, including contract negotiations and future acquisitions for the NCAA Men's Basketball Championship, regular-season college basketball and football bowl games. He also has been responsible for administering the network's various NCAA properties.

Aresco was instrumental in negotiating the CBS Television Network's current landmark agreement with the NCAA granting CBS Sports and Turner Sports exclusive rights to the NCAA Men's Basketball through 2024 and the Network's historic 15-year deal with the SEC.

Got that? Aresco's experience in college athletics has consisted solely of directing truckloads of money toward the men and women who profit from the effort of unpaid players. That's it. And as it happens, on Sept. 1, the Big East will begin negotiating its next television contract, with ESPN getting an exclusive 60-day window to hammer out a deal, after which the process gets thrown into the open market.

There's no telling what kind of value there is in having Boise State play Louisville in prime time, but whatever it is, Mike Aresco is the just the guy to get a maximum return. Now that Penn State's been dealt with—so that, as NCAA president Mark Emmert put it, "Football will never again be placed ahead of educating, nurturing and protecting young people"—it's time to get back to business. And the Big East, which was founded to function as nothing more than a cash register, has no illusions about exactly what business it's in.

Report: Jerry Sandusky Is Writing A Book While In Prison [Jerry Sandusky]

Aug 15, 2012 12:45 PM

Report: Jerry Sandusky Is Writing A Book While In PrisonTelevision station WJAC in Johnstown, Pa., is citing sources who say that's what Sandusky's been up to since he was taken off suicide watch sometime after being put behind bars in late June.

It would be Sandusky's second book; he had made his literary debut in 2001 with his unfortunately titled autobiography, Touched. This is from WJAC's report:

Sources told 6 News at first, it was believed Sandusky was writing his version of events that he wants to read at his sentencing.

Now, those sources said Sandusky is apparently working on writing a second book, and doing so with the help of his wife, Dottie.

Sources said there has been so much paperwork exchanged between Jerry and Dottie, [sic] that Dottie has had her written correspondence privileges suspended by prison officials.

Rafael Nadal Pulls Out Of U.S. Open With An Injury, So Let's Cue The "Style Of Play" Talk [Tennis]

Rafael Nadal announced this morning that he's pulling out of the U.S. Open, which begins in less than two weeks. What for? An "injury." No one knows what. When Nadal pulled out of the Olympics—he hasn't played a match since he was bounced in the second round of Wimbledon—it was a little unclear what the problem was. Tendinitis? Fatigue? Was he hurt in one knee or both knees?

So, a storyline about Nadal's career that's laid dormant for a while will be fully resurrected today. It's nothing you haven't heard before. Unlike Federer, who at 31 has a No. 1 ranking and a recent Wimbledon title, Nadal has always been perceived as something of a ticking time bomb. Whenever he's injured, descriptions of his knees make it sound as if we're talking about early-'70s Joe Namath. He punishes his body so much. The New York Times Magazine was all over this narrative more than three years ago when it asked: "Can Rafael Nadal survive his own grueling style of tennis?" (To this point, that "grueling style" involves "beating everyone." You wonder: Which tennis player who is better than Nadal should Nadal strive to play more like?)

Patrick McEnroe just appeared on SportsCenter and the words "style of play" were thrown around a lot. And here's what you'll be hearing some version of for the rest of the day:

Maybe there's something to it, but the problem with the analysis is that it ignores what happens all the time in sports—sometimes bodies adapt to peculiar, seemingly reckless styles of play. Tim Lincecum's scapula doesn't fly off into the San Francisco Bay; tiny Steve Nash is still going at 148 years old. There are absolutely issues with Nadal's body right now, but the jury is going to be out for a while on the long-term consequences of the 26-year-old's "style of play."

A Lady You All Know And Love Examines An Alley Brawl Between Ladies Who Seemingly Hate One Another [Video]

A Lady You All Know And Love Examines An Alley Brawl Between Ladies Who Seemingly Hate One Another Welcome to Tuesday Night Fights, a weekly celebration and analysis of street-fight videos found on YouTube. Tonight's fisticuffs: "GIRL FIGHT IN MARISSA ILL." Tonight's commentator: Emma Carmichael, former Deadspinner, current managing editor of Gawker.

So I spent the weekend in Rhode Island, hanging out with my mom and grandmother. It was WILD. We drank a lot of Pinot Greej on ice. And my grandmother, who is 80-something, is a boss of a lady who raised five girls and wears more gold, both real and fake, than any other human I know. It has been said that she looks like a duchess. Whenever I see my grandmother, she always wants to talk about the F-word, feminism, but without actually using the word. Instead she'll tell me a story about her 20s that basically boils down to a reminder that I'm really lucky to have grown up 50 years after she did. (I am.)

The main dinnertime topic with my grandmother this past weekend was the "rumor" she'd heard that women were actually boxing in the Olympics this year. Her priest, this Irish guy, had told her all about Katie Taylor and how his entire family was bunkered down to watch her fights and how they'd never been more excited about anything before, and my grandmother just could not believe it. She kept kind of goading me into conversations about the female boxers and how dreadful she thought it all was. My grandmother believes very firmly that women should not be hurting other women, because women should be kind to one another, and hurting people is not very womanly, anyway. A very nice sentiment. All this is to say that when I watch these Illinois gals, I become the 80-year-old woman wearing a scarf and clutching a white wine who just cannot believe her eyes. Holy hell.

I'm not necessarily opposed to the very idea of this series, Hickey, because the internet is the internet and this will exist without a weekly feature, but I do have to ask you, and maybe we can discuss it in the comments: Is this fun? Am I supposed to enjoy the girls digging each other's eyeballs out and nearly stomping each other's fresh faces into cracked cement? Won't some former cheerleader, at some point, die from some driveway beat-down like this? Is this womanly? When did I become my grandmother?

I think it was around the nine-second mark, actually, when Orange Shirt's first attack backfires and sends her backdown on the gravel. I know this might be difficult for ponytail-free men to understand, but long hair provides a hell of a handle. Pink Shirt's grasp at the eight/nine-second mark is absolutely brutal; Orange almost actually goes limp at the first tug. And then it's all Pink Shirt from there. Homegirl knows no mercy, and she's actually reveling in it. "YOU CAN BEAT MY ASS, CAN'T YOU?" she hollers around :35, right after four solid blows to Orange's head gives her another advantage. And then there's more hair-pulling. A few seconds later she even manages a hair-pull-and-slap move, which is horrifying but which I'll have to remember next time I'm in a brutal back-alley death match with a girl I'm old enough to babysit.

Here's what I wonder, if we may get just a little theoretical here, and humor my grandmother's lingering questions: Who is this for? Boxing to me is and was defensible (ignoring brain damage etc. etc.) because it's competitive and requires a specialized skill. Hair-pulling is not a specialized skill. But what's worse is that there is no way in hell that either Pink or Orange are actually enjoying rolling around in the gravel together. You watch Claressa Shields win a gold medal and you know she is reveling in it. Boxing has that agreement. This is just lady-on-lady hate. Our hair follicles deserve more. Our jabs deserve more. Ladies, we deserve more. If you like this, then you should at least put it in a ring.

Now if you'll excuse me I'm going to go watch my soaps.

And now, the rest of your Tuesday Night Fights:
